Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern are excited to see who Unai Emery will bring to the club in the summer transfer window.
The Gunners have wasted no time in revamping their squad following a disappointing 2017/18 season. Arsenal ended the season in sixth, missing out on Champions League football for the second year in a row. Emery has already begun strengthening his squad as he looks to return the club to the top of the division.
Juventus defender Stephen Lichtsteiner will seal a free transfer to the Emirates when his contract expires in Turin, and Sokratis Papastathopoulos is also on the verge of securing a £16m deal from Borussia Dortmund. Emery is expected to make Sampdoria midfielder, Lucas Torreira, his next signing after Arsenal staff travelled to Russia to complete his medical.
The latest reports suggest that Arsenal are interested in Borussia Dortmund midfielder – Mario Gotze. However, Emery would be wise to ignore him and pursue other targets. Valued at £16.2m by Transfermarkt, the German is no longer the player he used to be.
He made 23 appearances in the Bundesliga last season after re-joining Dortmund from Bayern Munich. Gotze scored just two goals and registered four assists after struggling for fitness due to a rare muscular disorder. His physical condition means he would be unsuited to the physicality of the Premier League and, while he can do little about that, the player has certainly dipped in every other aspect since winning the World Cup for his country.
If he can put his injury troubles behind him, he could be an excellent signing for the Gunners. That is a huge if, and it’s hard to see where the 26-year-old would fit into the team. It’s a risk not worth taking.
