Moving for £22.5m-rated star would be Mourinho’s worst transfer mistake in years

Manchester United fans in the Transfer Tavern have their fingers crossed for a big summer transfer window after watching their side end the season without a trophy.

The Red Devils finished 19 points behind Manchester City in the race for the Premier League title and tasted defeat in the FA Cup final at the hands of Chelsea. They were also knocked out of the Champions League by Sevilla highlighting the need for summer reinforcements. Alexis Sanchez arrived in January but needs a full pre-season to rediscover his best form.

Reports have suggested that Jose Mourinho will attempt to lure West Ham winger – Marko Arnautovic – to Old Trafford. Mourinho managed the Austrian during his time at Inter Milan and was spotted in the stands during Austria’s friendly believed to be casting an eye on his former player. Valued at £22.5m by Transfermarkt, signing Arnautovic would be a huge mistake.

The 29-year-old has netted 11 Premier League goals this season, but the Hammers will demand at least £50m if United’s interest is serious. For that money, there are plenty of better options. Arnautovic has his moments of brilliance but has failed to perform at the highest level consistently. Moving to United will also be a huge step up for someone who has never featured on a top-four side.

Not only is there question marks over his ability, but signing Arnautovic will also limit the opportunities that Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial will receive next year. At 29, he isn’t a player that will improve much in the future whereas both Martial and Rashford have enormous potential if they get game time.

It’s a move that smacks of desperation if United’s interest is true. Mourinho is better off looking elsewhere.
