The Crystal Palace fans in the Transfer Tavern are waiting in anticipation to see who Roy Hodgson is going to sign this January. They believe that a few new faces are needed to ensure that they survive the drop.
One position that Roy Hodgson could look at strengthening is the goalkeeper. Their current two senior options are Julian Speroni and Wayne Hennessey. Crystal Palace could definitely upgrade on these two options.
We are sure that Hodgson has been scouring the market for goalkeeping options but he might wait to spend in the summer instead. But bringing in a solid goalkeeper this month could save Crystal Palace several points which could be the difference between staying up and going down by the end of the season.
Crystal Palace should explore the option of bringing in Sam Johnstone from Manchester United. The Eagles have already signed Timothy Fosu-Mensah from Manchester United on a season-long loan deal so the Johnstone transfer would have to be a permanent deal.
Johnstone recently returned from a loan stint at Aston Villa but the Red Devils may be tempted to cut that short if another club is prepared to spend money to sign him. And the 24-year-old would certainly be worth the money.
He is arguably the finest goalkeeper in the Championship and his performances between the sticks have helped Aston Villa shore up their defence and launch a promotion bid. While the Villains want to sign him permanently, they are unable to do so at the moment because of Financial Fair Play restrictions.
Palace should take advantage of this and swoop for the former England youth international, who could well develop into a full senior international if he continues to impress.
