Moving for this £31.5m-rated defender would be a very smart decision by Arsenal

The Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern are pretty pleased with the business conducted by their team in January. They improved their attacking options no-end, with the signings of Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and whilst the sale of Alexis Sanchez is a major loss, the Gunners have more than made up for his departure.

However, there are still a few gaping holes in the Arsenal first team, and none are greater than in central defence. The Gunners are lacking serious quality at the back, and so it’s a position that will demand improvement come the summer.

Arsenal should already be looking at potential options in that regard, and one player that our landlord thinks would be perfect is Stefan de Vrij.

Currently playing for Lazio, de Vrij has emerged as one of Europe’s most talented defenders in recent years. Standing at 6ft2, he’s a marvel in the air, whilst he’s also comfortable with the ball at his feet. A no-nonsense defender, he has no problem getting stuck in and clearing the ball when necessary.

At 26-years-old, he’s a player just entering the prime of his career, and so if Arsenal were to sign him, they’d be able to enjoy his services for the best part of half a decade during his peak years.

Whilst De Vrij is worth his weight in gold on the pitch, the financial incentives of this deal cannot be ignored. His contract expires at the end of the season, and so he could potentially be available on a free contract. That would free up further funds for the Gunners to invest elsewhere. Not to mention, he’s rated at a whopping £31.5 million by Transfer Markt, and so if they wanted to sell him on down the road, they’d likely make a fortune.

In truth, this deal has little risk attached to it, whilst it has a huge potential reward for the Gunners.
