Chelsea picked up where they left off last season with an impressive goal fest against West Brom. Judging from this performance they look like the same well oiled and ruthless goal scoring machine that won the Premier League last season.
Chelsea’s demolition of West Brom served as a statement of intent for the season in that they are fully determined to continue and improve upon the successes of last season. The performance provided a scathing riposte to any critics of their under whelming pre-season results and suggestions that that their aging squad needs an injection of young talent after a quiet summer in the transfer market.
Wigan also began the new season in a similar fashion to how they finished the last with a high scoring defeat against fellow relegation prospects Blackpool. The Lactics player’s walked off the pitch at the DW stadium with the sound of their own fans booing them ringing in their ears.
It’s hard to envisage anything other than Chelsea winning this one by a wide margin and I can’t imagine the Wigan players are looking forward to this match given the 8-0 thrashing they received when the two teams met at the end of last season.
