As according to the Daily Star Arsene Wenger’s pursuit of Lorenzo Insigne could be over as quickly as it began.
That’s because Napoli have slapped a whopping £56 million price tag on the Italian midfielder.
Reports suggested that Wenger was readying a bid worth around £17 million for the 23-year old who may line-up against England on Saturday after being named in Cesare Prandelli’s World Cup squad.
A good tournament will only enhance the youngster’s reputation around Europe but club chairman Aurelio de Laurentis will certainly have spooked many with such an audacious asking fee.
The midfielder scored eight goals in 49 appearances last season, and helped Rafael Benitez’s side to success in the Copa Italia, and Champions League qualification.
Wenger meanwhile is under increasing pressure to bring in some new signings, with Arsenal fans frustrated by the clubs lack of major activity over the last two transfer windows.
