Samir Nasri has joined in the hunt to find Arsenal a decent centreback for next season and has recommended Mehdi Benatia, who he played with at youth level with Olympique Marseille. The France international believes he has found a star and would like to see the Moroccan at the Emirates next season.
The defender has alerted top teams across Europe with a series of impressive displays at the heart of the Udinese back line, and has proved himself a real threat from set plays too. With Arsenal’s Vermaelen also a threat going forward it is believed these two could form an exciting partnership at the back.
He has 3 goals from 26 league appearances this season. Not only a threat from set plays, his physical presence would make him an asset to any Premier League club, at 6’3″, he has the required stature necessary and the pace to match.
There is no doubt Benatia would be interested in a move to England. A further step in his career with a team that could challenge for top honours every season. While Udinese are currently having a good year sitting 4th in Serie A, they are rumoured to be ready to sell star player Alexis Sanchez, who has won them many matches single-handedly this year.
Benatia is latest centre back to be linked with Arsenal after a host of other names including Gary Cahill and Real Madrid’s Pepe. The latter would cost in excess of £20 million so Benatia may become the favoured target given Wenger’s resistance to spend big.
