Mark Hughes got his first win of the season on Tuesday night as the Saints beat Brighton 1-0 in the Carabao Cup.

It's the first win for Southampton this season and it was much needed for a team that was fighting relegation last season and had started this season poorly.

Last season, Southampton only managed to score 37 goals as Gabbiadini struggled for form, while Charlie Austin struggled with an injury which resulted in him only managing 24 games in the league where he racked up a total of seven goals.

Following their Carabao Cup win, Hughes admitted that the goal would be crucial for Austin and while the strikers must score more, Nathan Redmond must step up this season.

The Breakdown

Now 24, Redmond is a key player for Southampton this year and he has to be a key player for Hughes if the Saints want to improve this season.

Two seasons ago, Redmond scored seven goals in the league and was superb under Claude Puel, however last season, in 31 games he only scored one goal which for someone so talented let alone a starting Premier League winger, is terrible.

In the last two games, Redmond has been played on the left in a typical 4-4-2 and as of yet, has struggled to have an effect on the game. With Austin trying to kickstart some form and with Ings' injury problems, Redmond has to come inside and try to get involved in attacks.

If Redmond doesn't chip in with a fair amount of goals this season, Southampton may be fighting relegation once again.
