Liverpool goalkeeper, Pepe Reina, has been linked with a summer move to League leaders Manchester United. Although Kenny Dalglish has today dismissed the rumours, it would appear that Reina will be on his way from Anfield over the summer, with Arsenal and Manchester United keeping tabs on the Spaniard.
Dalglish said today that in Reina, Liverpool have ‘a fantastic goalkeeper and he will be here for a long, long time.’ Despite Dalglish’s words, Reina is stalling on making a decision with regards to his future at the club, claiming he wants guaranteed Champions League football next season. He told a Spanish radio station, ‘I won’t lie, I want to play in the Champions League and challenge for titles.’ Despite Liverpool’s resurgence under Dalglish, Reina remains unconvinced. ‘I can’t say anything logically, because I have a contract with Liverpool…We always fought to be in the Champions League and try to win the title. But unfortunately it hasn’t been the case in the last couple of years.’
Reina has been a good servant to the Kop, and has been almost an ever-present between the sticks during the current campaign, but with Van Der Sar due to retire at the end of the season and Arsenal looking for a truly world-class goalkeeper to go with their excellent forward play, Liverpool fans are well aware that they could see the end of the 28 year old’s spell at Anfield.
It’s likely that Sir Alex will have to make at least a £20 million bid to capture Reina from his fellow Scot.
