Here in the Football Transfer Tavern we are big fans of popular Channel 4 comedy The Inbetweeners and today the programme has made the lofty heights of being featured on our noticeboard as Arsenal fans celebrate the arrival of German international Mesut Ozil at the Emirates Stadium.
The original picture showed Ozil and his Gunners team-mate Lukas Podolski celebrating his signing at the English Premier League club and both players are clearly good friends while giving a thumbs-up with the famous Arsenal shirt.
However a quick-witted football supporter on the internet has realised that the image released on social networking sites looks very similar to a famous scene in the The Inbetweeners and has photo-shopped the picture with great comical effect that has brought much laughter in the tavern today.
The golden moment occurs when Jay, one of the main characters in the comedy, says goodbye to a lad who the rest of the group don’t know to which his new friend offers him two thumbs in return. That bring about a chorus of general ribbing from his usual friends and this is where the popular saying “Ohh….friend!” is born.
However in this case, ‘Ohhh….Arsenal friend!” seems slightly more apt. Although we expect the picture was created by fans of other Premier League clubs who are rather jealous of Arsenal landing the world class midfielder.
Can Mesut Ozil have as great an effect for the Gunners as Dennis Bergkamp did for Arsenal? Let us know your thoughts below.
