Tottenham Hotspur fans in the Transfer Tavern will be looking ahead to their FA Cup semi-final clash with Manchester United, although some will be concerned with the draw they picked up against Brighton and Hove Albion.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side sit fourth in the Premier League table and currently occupy the remaining Champions League spot, and despite an eight-point gap between themselves and 2017 champions Chelsea, they have not secured their place as of yet.
However, the manager is looking ahead to the future with Spurs and is already drawing up a list of aims and priorities he has this summer, including a new contract being in the offing for one of their most influential stars, as per a recent report from Football.London.
They are claiming Pochettino is set to offer defender Jan Vertonghen a new deal this summer following his impressive season at the back, which has seen him named in the PFA Team of the Year for the second time since his move to North London back in 2012.
The 31-year-old has a year left on his remaining contract and the club are keen to tie him down to a new deal, and thus avoid a situation like the one surrounding his compatriot Toby Alderweireld, who looks set to leave the club this summer given his current deal expires in 2019.
Landlord’s Verdict: The Tottenham locals in the Tavern will be pleased with the news that the club are eyeing a summer agreement to keep the Belgium international in North London, as he has consistently proven to be a solid defender at the back, whilst also helping to develop the capabilities of Davinson Sanchez and Juan Foyth, the former who has particularly impressed since his summer move from Ajax.
