The Sun have a rather interesting claim for Chelsea fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern as they note that Chelsea skipper John Terry may not be offered a new deal – despite Jose Mourinho returning to the club.
The Special One has renewed his vows with Chelsea and has already seen the likes of Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole offered new deals despite the objections of Rafael Benitez, meaning that his old guard is well and truly back with a bang.
Now Mourinho has spoken about his captain’s future and noted that a new contract will have to be earned from Roman Abramovich – no matter how well the player and his coach get on personally.
Mourinho noted that “He’s not safe and he knows he’s not safe.
“The only thing he knows is safe is our friendship, our relationship.
“We spoke about it and he understands perfectly that friends are friends but business is ‘apart’.
“This is business so, yes, he has to prove himself”
“I cannot make him protected or favourite in front of someone else — and he knows that because he knows my nature.”
Terry was of course one of the pivotal figures during Mourinho’s first spell at the club and now has to face an altogether different challenge, seeing off Gary Cahill, David Luiz and also Branislav Ivanovic at centre back while making himself indispensable once again – injuries and form permitting of course.
