After watching Maguire play a starring role in England’s route to the World Cup semi-final, it’s no surprise that Leicester City are keen to tie him down on a new deal this summer.
Maguire is slowly becoming something of an England hero following his impressive campaign in Russia.
There is something rather endearing about his humble footballing background and his infamously large head which he has used to command the back-five and score his first England goal during the World Cup.
But the standard of performances Maguire is consistently putting in are bound to attract interest from some of Europe’s top clubs this summer, so Leicester need to ensure he receives financial reward for his rapid rise at both club and international level.
According to The Leicester Mercury, Maguire is set to join Jamie Vardy and Kasper Schmeichel as the highest paid players at the club – a move which will certainly be met with delight by the Foxes faithful.
Now that Riyad Mahrez has left the club for Manchester City it’s vitally important that Puel keeps the rest of his best players at the club to ensure a smooth transition into the post-Mahrez era.
With that in mind, there’s no doubt that Leicester will complete their most important deal of the summer if they convince Maguire to commit to his future at the King Power.
The signings of Jonny Evans, Ricardo Pereira and James Maddison represent a positive step in the right direction for the club, but without Maguire at the heart of the defence leading the back-four, Leicester’s chances of challenging for Europa League football would be left in tatters.
Maguire’s meteoric rise in the past two years has been a real plus point for England in their bid to emulate the spirit of 1966, but Leicester must ensure that his announcement on the world stage does not serve to derail their season before it’s even begun.
