New Man City boss eying surprise deal for Arsenal misfit

ArtetaManchester City fans have been left stunned in the Transfer Tavern this afternoon, amid reports they want to take a player who can’t get minutes at Arsenal.

The Times says Pep Guardiola, who will replace Manuel Pellegrini at the end of the current season, wants to bring Arsenal captain Mikel Arteta to the Etihad Stadium.

However, the deal for the 33-year-old former Everton and Rangers man would see Arteta given his first coaching role in football, should he decide to hang-up his playing boots once this season draws to a close.

Arteta’s deal with Arsenal expires at the end of the season and the Gunners policy is usually to offer just a one-year extension to players over the age of thirty. Whilst Arsene Wenger has adjusted that stance in the past, no offer to the Spaniard has been forthcoming.

The experienced Basque midfielder has captained Arsenal for the past two years, overseeing double FA Cup successes, but his playing time has decreased dramatically and, as such, he started coaching the youth sides earlier this season to get experience.

Should Arteta retire from playing this summer, our landlord feels Arsenal will offer him the chance to continuing coaching at the club but the offer from Guardiola could be too good for the veteran midfielder to turn down.

Arsenal fans, should Arteta stay at your club this summer as a coach if he retires? Let us know in the comments below!
