The Football Transfer Tavern was pretty busy this morning as Chelsea and Manchester United learnt their fate in today’s Champions League draw.
After their remarkable comeback victory over Olympiakos on Wednesday, the Red Devils supporters now face what most punters are calling mission impossible after drawing current holders Bayern Munich.
Following the draw, Mail Online reporter Sami Mokbel has news of a possible new defensive reinforcement for United.
Mokbel suggests that Manchester United are considering a move for Southampton centre back Dejan Lovren with the view to a summer transfer.
It’s clear to us that the Red Devils will be strengthening their defence during the post-season with Nemanja Vidic heading to Inter Milan and Rio Ferdinand set to announce his retirement. This means that Moyes is on the lookout for at least one quality centre back as he tries to rebuild his back four.
Now it seems that Lovren has emerged as potential signing.
The 24-year-old Croatian has been an impressive member of Mauricio Pochettino’s Southampton side this term following his summer transfer from Lyon.
He would have stood out against United earlier this season as a struck a late equaliser in their 1-1 draw at Old Trafford and with United scouts reportedly watching young Luke Shaw every week, Mokbel suggests that this has seen them notice Lovren, with a detailed scouting report impressing the Premier League champions.
Now Moyes could be ready to formalise this interest with a summer bid, although it is likely that the Saints will want a lot more than the estimated £8.5 million they originally paid for Lovren.
Do you think that this Saints man would be a suitable acquisition for Moyes? Let us know your thoughts below.
