Newcastle United and Tottenham supporters have been in contrasting moods in the Transfer Tavern recently, what with the Magpies suffering defeats in their last two matches before the international break while Spurs picked up important victories in both of their games.
Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle made an impressive start to the new Premier League season but their momentum has been stemmed somewhat in recent times, having lost 1-0 to both Burnley and Bournemouth prior to the fortnight’s interruption. Yet things were a whole lot brighter at Wembley as Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs brilliantly dispatched Real Madrid 3-1 to qualify for the last 16 of the Champions League, before edging past Crystal Palace 1-0 in the Premier League to move level on points with second place Manchester United.
Thus, both sets of supporters have been feeling rather different in the Transfer Tavern this week, but both are likely to be intrigued and perhaps encouraged by a recent report from The Sun, which suggests that Newcastle and Tottenham are keeping tabs on Athletic Bilbao striking sensation Gorka Guruzeta.
The 21-year-old is coming up through the ranks at the Spanish outfit and has regularly featured for their junior team Bilbao Athletic in the last few years, bagging 13 goals in 51 games for the side.
And with six goals coming this term, the striker is clearly making huge strides at the La Liga outfit, so much so that there is reported interest from England in the Spaniard’s services, with the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham, and Newcastle all thought to be monitoring his progress.
And with Guruzeta out of contract at the end of the current campaign, it certainly appears that his future is away from Bilbao, but where he begins his next adventure very much remains to be seen.
Landlord’s verdict: Gorka Guruzeta is beginning to make a name for himself in Spain with Athletic Bilbao’s junior side Bilbao Athletic, having netted 13 goals in 51 games for the side.
And with six goals coming in just 14 appearances this term, the 21-year-old appears to be going from strength to strength, and as such is reportedly attracting interest from the Premier League, with the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, Newcastle, and Tottenham all reportedly monitoring his progress.
Mauricio Pochettino has worked wonders with several young players at Spurs to suggest that North London is a desirable destination, yet Rafa Benitez could give the youngster a faster-track to first team football at St James’ Park.
Thus, only time will tell where Guruzeta ends up.
