Newcastle boss apologies for another derby defeat

McClarenSome punters here at the Transfer Tavern still feel that Newcastle manager Steve McLaren owes them a pint or two, even despite his open letter of apology to the fans for their 3-0 derby day defeat to Sunderland.

Indeed, as the Chronicle report, McLaren issued the open letter to his fans after losing their sixth derby in a row to the Black Cats, with the former England manager clearly frustrated at the manner of their defeat.

McLaren, who also spent time at another Newcastle rival in the form of Middelsborough, did try and stress to supporters how dominant Newcastle were before the sending off of captain Fabricio Collocini.

Newcastle found Sunderland stopper Costel Pantillimon in fine form that afternoon, with both Alexsandr Mitrovic and Georgino Wijnaldum guilty of missing good chances.

McLaren did certainly have some positives to take out of Newcastle’s display, and, with Collocini’s red card being overturned, he can certainly feel aggrieved at the bad luck they experienced on the day.

Sunderland on the other hand, who scored with all 3 of the shots they had on target that afternoon, did at least show Newcastle the importance of being clinical in front of goal, and that is something that will concern McLaren if they are to bounce back this week against Stoke City.

Newcastle fans, was McClaren the right appointment? Can you fend off relegation? Let us know in the comments below!
