The Newcastle United fans are gathered at the bar in The Transfer Tavern discussing reports that their boss has had a change of heart with regards to the future of one of their midfielders.
The Guardian is reporting that Steve McClaren wants Ivory Coast international Cheick Tiote to remain with the club, after an impressive performance in Saturday’s win over West Bromwich Albion.
McClaren raised a few eyebrows when he chose Tiote over new signing Henri Saivet but his decision was justified, with the midfielder looking back to his old self in the heart of the Newcastle midfield.
Previously, the controversial Ivorian was tipped for an exit from Tyneside but his recent performance has seen manager Steve McClaren change his mind. Speaking after the game, he said:
“In Taylor and Tioté we had fight and character on the field. Their spirit is exactly what we need. If you get that from those two, the rest follow. They’re so aggressive in the way they play.”
“Tioté has only been back training with us for two days but he’s 100% committed and, if he keeps his composure and passes simply, he’s a very good player. I hope he stays now.”
The Newcastle fans in The Tavern are not so convinced the midfielder should remain as they feel his lack of consistent performances will not help the club avoid the drop from the Premier League.
