Newcastle boss planning big changes against Liverpool

McClarenNewcastle United fans in the Transfer Tavern are feeling a bit more optimistic ahead of this weekend’s clash with Premier League giants Liverpool after reading reports that big changes are inevitable.

Reports from the Chronicle have revealed that Newcastle head coach Steve McClaren, is set to make big changes against Liverpool at the weekend, as he is keen to have more competition for places amongst the squad.

After two alarming defeats in the Premier League, which have left the North East side 19th in the table, McClaren will look to bring players out of the cold as he seeks answers to Newcastle’s concerning run of form.

Amongst those players in contention for a return to first-team action is central defender Mike Williamson.

After Jamaal Lascellas picked up a hamstring injury in United’s 5-1 defeat to Crystal Palace, McClaren will need to call on his available replacements while counting down the days until the opening of the January transfer window.

Williamson, who had been recalled from his loan spell at Championship outfit, Wolverhampton Wanderers, said:

“You want to be playing at the highest level you can. And if that’s the case I am happy to be back. My time at Wolves was a good opportunity and a very good fit with a young group. I got on well with the manager (Kenny Jackett). Hopefully I can play on Sunday and it will be worth coming back.”

Although nobody is guaranteed a return to first-team action, Williamson, who hasn’t played since the final day of last season in a 2-0 win over West Ham, has been assured that he is likely to make a comeback.
