Chronicle Live have revealed that Benitez has given the green light for a long term deal to be handed to Wales international Paul Dummett.

It is being rumoured that the 24-year-old defender is on the brink of signing the new deal ahead of the club’s tense battle against relegation.

His current deal is set to expire in 2017, so the Magpies clearly see him as an important asset.

But as well as arranging new deals, Benitez has also released a couple of players.

Gabriel Obertan and Sylvain Marveaux have both had their contracts terminated, even though their contracts were set to expire at the end of the season.

Our landlord here in the Transfer Tavern feels that Dummett definitely has a future at Newcastle United, and says his steady performances are key to the Magpies.
