According to The Independent, Newcastle manager Rafa Benítez has told fans to keep the belief in his side, as they search for their first win of the season.
The Magpies have only managed one point so far this season, after Saturday’s loss to Arsenal at St James’ Park.
However, despite this ominous start for Benítez’s men, it isn’t as bad as it may seem. Four of Newcastle’s opening games have been against Tottenham, Chelsea, Man City and Arsenal, and although they were on the wrong side of the result in all those fixtures, they gave a good account of themselves in match-ups that they were probably expected to lose in truth.
However, amongst those tough fixtures were lesser matches against Cardiff in the Premier League, where they drew, and Nottingham Forest in the League Cup, where they lost. But the club only had ten men on the field against the Welsh side, in amongst a host of injuries. Although these seem like excuses, Newcastle should feel confident with their upcoming fixtures.
The Magpies face Crystal Palace and Leicester in their next two fixtures, before heading to Old Trafford to face Man United at the beginning of October. Once they have faced José Mourinho’s men, they do not face another team from last season’s top six until Boxing Day, where they face Liverpool.
That gives Benítez a chance to improve his side’s fortunes after a turbulent start, which he certainly should do. However, if the Spaniard fails to improve Newcastle’s position in the table, which is currently 19th, by Christmas, then the alarm bells should be ringing.
