However, the 24-year-old defender, who is currently on the radar of Italy boss Roberto Mancini, will not be allowed to leave by the Serie A club in January.
So, the Magpies may have to wait until the summer to secure the services of the Italian, but could face competition from a number of other sides.
Francesco Vicari has come on leaps and bounds over the past season or so as he continues to impress over in Italy.
Indeed, the Magpies desperately need to strengthen the heart of their defence in January, but they may have to sign someone else due to Vicari’s apparent unavailability.
Nevertheless, it’s a positive for Newcastle United fans as Benitez is looking to strengthen in the right areas.
