Newcastle’s hunt for a striker seems to be coming to a close, much to the delight of Rafa Benitez.

The Magpies have been looking for a striker over the last few weeks in order to bolster their attacking options.

With time running out, Mike Ashley did manage to sign Yoshinori Muto to try and fill the striker void but Newcastle are still in the hunt for more.

If the club hope to have any chance of maintaining their 10th place finish or even stay in the league next year, Ashley has to bring another striker before the window closes.

With that in mind, according to reports, West Brom’s Venezuelan striker Salomon Rondon is close to joining the Magpies.

Rondon was left out of West Brom’s squad for their Championship opener on Saturday, leading to speculation that a move may be close to being finalised.

The Breakdown

While Newcastle might need another forward, Rondon might not be the one the club need.

The strong striker has always been one that has flashed potential but has never delivered consistently, with his league-high being nine goals in his first with the Baggies.

His hold up play may well fit in with the Benitez’s style of play but if the club want to maintain their Premier League status, they need a mobile striker who can get 15 or more goals a season.

Although he’s in the peak of his career, Rondon just isn’t going to be the man Newcastle need.
