It looks like Newcastle could have a tough season ahead as the club struggles to bring in any players on a permanent deal.

With the right amount of signings, Newcastle could've been aiming for a top half finish but if they continue their summer business at the rate they're going, the club will be fighting relegation next season.

The club need to bring in some new signings this summer but have so far only made three, Newcastle have mainly been looking for attackers to bolster their forward line and had been heavily linked with a move for Alassane Plea who has now joined Borussia Monchengladbach. However, according to Sky Sports' Keith Downie, the Magpies are now targeting a move for Mexican international Diego Reyes.

The Breakdown

Now a free agent, the Mexican international has represented his country 53 times and most recently played 22 games for Porto last season.

Former Anderlecht man, Chancel Mbemba is set to leave the club this window and has been heavily linked with a move to Porto himself. If Mbemba does leave, it would leave Newcastle with only three recognised centrebacks although Paul Dummett can also play there.

At the moment Jamaal Lascelles and Florian Legeune are the first choice pair for Rafa Benitez. While both are the clear choices for the first-team, Benitez could do with some options to fill the squad.

With Mbemba going for between £6-7 million a free transfer would help Mike Ashley conserve every bit of money he needs. While a defender isn't high on the club's list, it's probably what the fans should expect this summer.
