Newcastle could face summer battle to retain ace as unwelcome reports emerge

Newcastle United supporters remain hugely buoyant in the Transfer Tavern well over a week on from their side’s crucial 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the Premier League, a result which moved the North East giants out of the division’s relegation zone.

Rafa Benitez’s men slipped into the bottom three just prior to their kick-off against Jose Mourinho’s Red Devils following Huddersfield Town’s 4-1 success over Bournemouth earlier in the day, yet the Magpies showed no signs of pressure by producing a wonderful performance at St James’ Park. Matt Ritchie’s effort midway through the second half was enough to seal a deserved victory for Benitez’s side, moving them up to 13th in the Premier League table with just 11 matches of the campaign remaining.

Thus, there have been several thrilled Newcastle fans in the Tavern in recent times, although they are unlikely to be overly delighted with a recent report from The London Evening Standard, which suggests that Chelsea are eyeing up a possible summer move for defender Jamaal Lascelles.

The 24-year-old made the move to the North East back in 2014 and has since gone from strength to strength with the Magpies, featuring 92 times in all competitions, including 43 last term in their run to the Championship title.

And with several impressive displays in the heart of the Newcastle backline this season, the young centre-back is continuing to earn rave reviews, and it appears that he is attracting interest as well as reports suggest that Chelsea are lining up a possible summer move for the Englishman.

And although the Magpies agreed a new long-term deal with Lascelles earlier this term, the Blues will likely be able to match and exceed that, leaving Newcastle with a likely battle to retain the defensive ace over the summer months.

Landlord’s verdict: Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles has been absolutely outstanding for the Magpies this term, and is likely to play a huge part in their quest to avoid Premier League relegation.

And the 24-year-old’s efforts have reportedly attracted the interest of current champions Chelsea, who are reportedly on the lookout for defensive reinforcements as they seek to build ahead of next season.

Undoubtedly, Lascelles has proven his credentials at this level and Newcastle will not want to lose him, but the financial power the Blues possess may well be enough to convince both the club and the player himself of a move to Stamford Bridge.
