Newcastle could push for top-six next season by landing Chelsea’s 6ft 3in midfielder

The Newcastle United supporters have been in fine voice in the Transfer Tavern of late after their side all but secured their survival.

Rafa Benitez’s side have been in brilliant form since the end of the January transfer window, and their dramatic improvement has enabled them to steer clear of a relegation battle with five fixtures left to play. The Toon Army propping up our bar have been delighted by the progress their club have made in such a short space of time, so naturally they are beginning to question how far they can improve in the next campaign.

Of course, the ownership situation will largely dictate Newcastle’s progress next season, as Benitez could potentially depart the club if Mike Ashley is unable to agree a deal with a new investor this summer. However, if Benitez can be convinced to stay at the club following the arrival of a new owner, the Magpies will have a fantastic opportunity to challenge for a place in the top-six next season.

Benitez will need to significantly bolster Newcastle’s options across the field if his side are to continue the momentum they have gathered so far this season into the new campaign, and one player he would be foolish not to consider is Chelsea’s Ruben Loftus Cheek (valued at £7.2 million by Transfermarkt).

The 22-year-old midfielder is currently playing his trade on loan at Crystal Palace where he has made a huge impact since arriving at Selhurst Park last summer. He has impressed with his combative nature and technical quality in midfield, and his excellent form earned him his first England cap back in October against Germany – a game in which he won the man-of-the-match award.

Considering the level of quality he has shown this season, it’s unlikely that Chelsea will be willing to let him leave for a modest price, but Newcastle’s investment in Loftus-Cheek would certainly pay dividends in the long-term, so they should not be deterred by a steep asking price.

Newcastle have made excellent progress in recent months, so it’s important they continue to establish themselves as a solid Premier League outfit by signing players of genuine quality this summer – such as Loftus-Cheek – in order to build a squad which is capable of challenging for Europa League football next season.
