Newcastle United supporters have been reasonably satisfied in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their side pick up a decent point from their visit to Crystal Palace on Sunday, although they remain firmly embroiled in a Premier League relegation dogfight.
Rafa Benitez’s men went into their clash with the Eagles off the back of drawing 1-1 with Burnley in midweek, a result which extended their winless league run to three matches dating back to their narrow success over Stoke City on January 1. And the North East giants weren’t able to end that barren run despite taking the lead at Selhurst Park through Mo Diame, as Luka Milivojevic’s penalty ten minutes into the second half levelled proceedings to leave both sides having to settle for a share of the spoils.
Subsequently, there have been many satisfied Magpies fans in the Tavern in recent times, and they are likely to be intrigued and perhaps encouraged by a recent report from The Northern Echo, which suggests that a summer move for January target Nicolai Jorgensen could be in the offing should the club remain in the top-flight.
Benitez’s side reportedly failed with two bids for the Denmark international during the winter window as they sought much-needed attacking reinforcements, what with the club bagging just 24 goals in their 26 Premier League matches thus far.
And with the 27-year-old having scored nine times for Feyenoord so far this season, Jorgensen may well have bolstered those ranks, and while they were unable to do a deal during January, reports suggest that a summer move could be in the offing with Newcastle reportedly set to ‘keep an eye’ on his progress in the coming months.
And while that doesn’t help with their immediate battle to avoid the drop, if they can indeed stay in the Premier League this term, things could be a lot brighter next term.
Landlord’s verdict: Newcastle United reportedly failed with two bid for Feyenoord’s Nicolai Jorgensen during the January window, but the Magpies aren’t willing to give up the chase just yet.
Reports suggest that they could well resurrect a bid for the 27-year-old in the summer should they remain in the Premier League, with the North East giants set to ‘keep an eye’ on the striker ahead of possibly bolstering their ranks in the summer.
And seeing this desire to land the Denmark international could also be a signal to manager Rafa Benitez that, if he can keep them in the division this term, things could be a lot better and brighter next time round.
