Newcastle fans in the Transfer Tavern are fretting over news one of their club’s most exciting youngsters is being eyed up by a number of top Premier League sides.
The Magpies’ youth system has struggled to bring academy products through to first-team level in recent years, but defender Lewis Gibson is reportedly rated as one of English football’s most exciting youngsters.
According to BleacherReport’s Dean Jones, however, the Championship outfit are ‘braced’ for a battle to hold onto the teenager, having been scouted by Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United.
It’s added that Newcastle want to tie down the England U17 to a professional contract, but it’s beginning to look like he’ll leave Tyneside.
The Toon may be struggling to hold onto their youngsters but at first-team level, Rafa Benitez’s side have been going strong this season, setting the pace in the Championship and well on course for an instant return to the Premier League.
They’re currently a point above second-place Brighton and seven points clear of dropping into the playoff positions with just eight games of the season remaining. Their next comes on Saturday, when Benitez’s side host Wigan Athletic at St. James’ Park.
