Newcastle United’s place in the Premier League may look a little far from assured at the moment, however, Rafa Benitez’s future at St. James’ Park seems to be even unclearer.
The Spaniard revealed to Sky Sports ahead of their encounter with Crystal Palace that they were ‘not too close’ to an agreement, leaving to question marks about what may happen at the end of the season.
Remarks like that would naturally send the rumour mill into overdrive and reports in southern Europe have started to suggest that one man could be targeted.
What’s the News?
According to Portuguese media outlet Record, Newcastle are thought to be interested in bringing Jorge Jesus in as manager should Benitez look to leave at the end of the season.
The 64-year-old is currently employed after a spell in Saudi Arabia with Al-Hilal, however, he has plenty of experience of winning titles in his homeland with Benfica and Sporting Lisbon.
Benitez’s latest comments will continue to leave uncertainty in the air at Newcastle and it may be a smart idea for the Magpies to start looking at other potential candidates should a contract not be agreed to in the summer.
And, Jesus could be an excellent manager to have at the helm at St. James’ Park, as he has plenty of experience and also has a winning mentality.
The former Benfica boss has been excellent throughout his managerial career and boasts a rather impressive record when it comes down to getting results.
Whether he would be able to have the same impact in English football and make himself a favourite at Newcastle remains to be seen, although fans will likely be hoping they will not have to find that out.
Newcastle fans, do you think Jesus could be an ideal successor to Benitez? Join in with the discussion below by sharing your thoughts with us.
