There is shock here in the Football Transfer Tavern as the Daily Mirror claim that Newcastle United are after a player who is not French – in fact he plays for Celtic.
The club are on the lookout for a centre half after the future of Fabricio Coloccini looks increasingly bleak. The club skipper has long been looking for a move away from the Magpies and is looking to return home to his native Argentina and Newcastle are only too aware of this fact.
The club have been eyeing Wilson for some time now and are willing to make a bid for the player in order to have at least another option should their skipper chose to leave in the summer. Alan Pardew seems to have decided to build up a starting eleven of French players yet English centre half Wilson has impressed this season and was particularly impressive in the Champions League which of course saw Celtic get out of the group stages finally falling to Juventus in the last 16 knock-out round.
The club feel that they can get Wilson for around £5 million and this is an amount they are more than willing to spend for someone who has shown as much promise as the 27-year-old. Scouts were on hand to watch the defender this weekend against St Mirren as the interest in him hots up.
