Newcastle fans are right to criticise Atsu, but can’t offer solutions

Newcastle fans are right to criticise Atsu, but can’t offer solutions

In the wake of Newcastle’s dismal performance against Leicester last Saturday, fans took to Twitter to discuss the team’s performance.

As expected, very little of it was positive, as their club are still searching for their first win of the season. The Magpies currently sit in 18th place in the Premier League, saved only by their superior goal difference to Huddersfield and Cardiff, who they are level on points with.

In light of this performance, one of our regular punters delved through Twitter, and reported that Newcastle fans were particularly aggrieved with winger Christain Atsu’s performance. The Ghana international was invariably described as the worst player on the pitch, and is in horrendous form at the moment.

However, it would be grossly unfair to say that the 26-year-old is the only player out of form in Tyneside at the moment, and that is the problem for manager Rafa Bénitez; he simply has no one to replace him with. Brazilian winger Kenedy is in equally poor form, which means that the Spaniard is scraping at the bottom of the barrel for options.

Jacob Murphy is the only other real contender to occupy the left flank, but the former Real Madrid boss has preferred to play the 23-year-old from the bench so far this season. Another option after that is turning to academy prospect Cal Roberts, but Newcastle fans will simply hope that their players’ performances improve.

Newcastle fans are right to pick up on Atsu’s poor form this season, but while they are finding problems easy to come by, solutions are much more elusive.
