It’s no secret that Newcastle United fans love a homegrown lad making their first team after coming through the academy and that’s exactly what Paul Dummett has done. The 26-year-old Welshman was named as captain against Chelsea on Sunday and the supporters loved seeing him lead the side out.
Told he wasn’t good enough by Alan Pardew. Proved him wrong.
Has played more minutes than any other player under Rafa. Captains his boyhood club in the PL.

Paul Dummett has proven a lot of his doubters wrong, including Alan Pardew who told the defender he wasn’t good enough, as he’s bettered himself and is now one of the first names on Rafa Benitez’s teamsheets. After a couple of season’s worth of hard graft it seems that Dummett is the most reliable full-back at the club and Sunday would have been the proudest moment of his career as he captained his boyhood club out against Chelsea.
The result wasn’t what they were hoping for as a dodgy penalty decision saw them go 1-0 down before Joselu equalised in spectacular fashion with a header at the near post. However, it wasn’t to be for the Geordies as DeAndre Yedlin was the unfortunate culprit to turn in Marcos Alonso’s ball into the Newcastle box, giving Maurizio Sarri’s side their third straight win.
You can read the proud Magpies’ verdict on Dummett here:
So pleased for the lad yesterday. Especially having stuck it right up the boo boy noses. Well done bonny lad, you're crucial to this team.

Paul Dummett converted me last season. Our defensive record with him in the team compared to without was too big to be ignored.
Stat about mins played surprised me though. Was he not out for a chunk of last season? Would've thought Lascelles would have had more mins.

Loads of Newcastle fans were loving life when they saw Dummett leading the line against Chelsea and it’s something they’ll be keen to see more of as the season continues.
