West Ham fans in the Football Transfer Tavern were against the idea of Joey Barton moving to Upton Park on a free transfer, however Newcastle supporters have voted 72% in favour of the midfielder making a return to St James’ Park, according to the Newcastle Chronicle.
Barton spent four years at Newcastle, and was voted the club’s player of the season in 2011.
A recent poll taken by the Chronicle revealed that 72% of Newcastle supporters would like to see the 32-year-old return, and Barton recently had a say on the matter himself.
Speaking on Twitter (where else?) Barton said he would consider a return to the north East, but only if significant changes were made by those who run the club, having gallen out with the board prior to his departure in 2011.
Whether Newcastle would move for the one-cap England international is yet to be seen however, with Steve McClaren well stocked in the midfield department.
The Magpies are on the hunt for another centre back and a centre forward before the close of the transfer window, although the prospect of signing such an experienced former player on a free transfer may be an enticing one.
Our resident Newcastle United fans over by the dartboard here in the Transfer Tavern feel bringing back Barton wouldn’t be that bad, as long as he isn’t on monumental wages!
