Manchester United travelled to Switzerland yesterday to face Young Boys in the Champions League group stage opener and they came away with three goals, three points and a clean sheet. However, before they opened the scoring their Swiss opposition could have punished them and it was young Kevin Mbabu who shone in the opening half an hour, leaving Newcastle fans frustrated.
The 23-year-old full-back was allowed to leave the club by Rafa Benitez back in summer 2017. During the same summer, Benitez made a move to sign Javier Manquillo from Atletico Madrid and looking back at that decision now, Benitez really messed up. At the age of 23, Mbabu has loads of time to turn into a quality full-back and he’s already looking very impressive with a number of strong displays, including the one last night.
Up against Anthony Martial for the 90 minutes, the defender gave a good account of himself. The French winger was largely very quiet in the first half and if it wasn’t for Paul Pogba’s stunning opener and then a dodgy penalty decision the score could very easily have been 0-0 at half-time and Young Boys could have gone on to claim a result. However, it did finish 3-0 and it’s very rare that fans rave over a defender when they’ve lost 3-0 but that’s a testament to how well Mbabu played last night.
