A lot of Newcastle fans on Twitter have been commenting on how pleased they are to see that Mikel Merino has left the club. The midfielder was announced by Real Sociedad on their twitter account yesterday and most fans couldn’t be happier as they only want players who are committed to the club to be wearing the shirt this season.

Merino joined Newcastle last summer initially on loan from Borussia Dortmund before eventually meeting a clause in his loan contract that made him a permanent signing at the club. When he became a permanent addition of the Magpies’, Merino supposedly insisted on having a £10 million release clause in his contract and this summer has seen Sociedad activate that clause, with Rafa Benitez powerless to stop him leaving.
The fans wouldn’t have stopped Merino from leaving even if they could and they all seem more than happy that he’s finally left the club. The Spaniard impressed the fans in his first few months in the Northeast but after missing a couple of games in October with a back injury he failed to get back into the squad as the form of both Jonjo Shelvey and Mo Diame kept him sidelined. In the end, the club made a tidy profit on Merino and that money will be more useful to the fans than a passionless midfielder who wants to leave.
You can read the Geordies’ verdict on Merino here:
Not one bit, if someone wants to leave then let them, we only want people who want to wear that black and white shirt with pride, passion and to fall in love with it like all the fans already have

He hasn’t really shown us much since he’s been here, and if he doesn’t want to fight for his place in the team, best we cash in on him!

Yes and no that lad started off amazing but since his injury and Jon jo and Big mo playing mint he didn’t look the same when given the chance .. shame he didn’t want to stop and fight his place though

Started with so much promise but it looks like he really wanted to leave in January so it’s best he’s away

Even from just a few tweets it’s easy to see how pleased the Magpies are to see Merino leave.
