Newcastle lost 2-1 at home to Chelsea yesterday meaning they’re still winless for the season and have just one point on the board. However, they played very well today and can feel hard done by not to have taken at least a point away from the game. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be, though, even though Federico Fernandez was superb on his debut.

Fernandez came into a back three alongside Ciaran Clark and fellow new boy Fabian Schar as Jamaal Lascelles was dropped from the matchday squad. Last season’s centre-back partnership of Lascelles and Florian Lejeune have made it interesting for the Magpies this season as it’s always guesswork as to who will start at the back. However, after today it looks like Fernandez will be the first choice at St James Park.
Next week the Geordies will be making the trip to Manchester where they’ll be taking on Manchester City at The Etihad and that is one game that will not be easy in the slightest. The Citizens are unbeaten in the Premier League despite stuttering at Molineux on Saturday and they’ll be keen to get back to winning ways against the Magpies when Fernandez and co turn out at The Etihad next weekend.

You should be proud you played really well today and you were a rock at the back. It was only a dodgy pen and a weak free kick that did it for us

Very well played today. Can’t wait to see @aguerosergiokun get stuck in your back pocket next week!

The supporters loved seeing their new boy in action and the Argentine will be keen to get back out on the pitch next weekend.
