Newcastle United’s U23s travelled to The Keepmoat Stadium to face Doncaster Rovers in their Checkatrade Trophy group. With the senior side at St James Park falling below par, any sort of victory would do for the Magpies, and the youngsters delivered as they put the Rovers to the sword with a 3-1 victory.

The Checkatrade Trophy is always a strange one, with Premier League side’s fielding their U23s against the EFL teams regular elevens. There’s no doubt that Doncaster Rovers would have fielded a weaker side last night but that doesn’t take any of the plaudits away from the Geordies who turned up and played the way that the senior side would have been proud of.
Goals from Tom Allan, Callum Roberts and Elias Sorensen were enough to down the hosts and after the big 3-1 win, a lot of the fans have been celebrating, with some even calling for their band of youngsters to be thrown in at the deep end against Arsenal after the international break. It’s unlikely that Rafa Benitez will heed the call and whilst some of the U23s might make the bench against The Gunners, the next game they’ll be worrying about is against Southampton’s U23s a week on Friday.

Not even sure our "first team" would manage this if we were to play away to Doncaster on the Carabao or FA Cup..
