Usually, any contract news coming out of Newcastle United concerns the manager, Rafa Benitez. However, the Spanish gaffer isn’t the only star at St James Park who’s contract expires in six months, and the fans have been calling for Mo Diame to be signed up before it’s too late.
Rafa Benitez wants Mo Diame to get a contract extension and an extension could be triggered should be Senegalese midfielder reach a certain number of appearances this season. He has only 6 months left on his current deal. #Nufc https://t.co/n1XTdLHCK2

According to an article in The Chronicle, Benitez is keen to see Diame hit a clause in his current deal that will see the Senegalese international extend his current deal beyond summer 2019, but it’s unclear how many appearances the midfielder will have to make to reach that, as he currently sits on 91 outings for the Geordies since he swapped Hull for Newcastyle back in summer 2016.
The Magpies have also been hit with the unfortunate news that Yoshinori Muto and Ki Sung-Yeung will both be leaving the club for a month between January and February as they’ve been called up by their respective nations to compete in the Asian Cup. That leaves Benitez’s midfield looking thin and he’ll have to use Diame whether he likes ot or not, so reaching this contract extension clause shouldn’t be too much of a problem.
You can read the Magpies’ thoughts on the Diame contract situation here:
We need him, his defensive stats are some of the best in the league for his position, we don’t have anyone and are unlikely to get anyone to fill the gap he could leave.

He deserves a contract extension. May not be perfect every game. But boy does he put a shift in for the team. Similar to Perez not always perfect grafts for the team week in week out! #NUFC

The Geordies are desperate to sign Diame up on a new deal and will hope the Senegalese midfielder can do his utmost to play his way to a new contract.
