Newcastle fans are juggling with the idea of dropping back down into the Championship. The Magpies are just three points off of the relegation zone at the moment and with seven teams all in the mix for the drop, they’re not safe. However, Newcastle fan account NUFC360 has taken to Twitter with a bold claim about the Championship.
*Tin hat on*
The most excited I’ve been as an #nufc fan in the last 5 years was the Championship campaign under Rafa.
The Premier League may be the financial promised land, but it’s the equivalent of purgatory for supporters of clubs outside the top six.

When Newcastle United were in the Championship, Rafa Benitez led them to the title in England’s second tier, battling against the odds to usurp Brighton on the final day, and it was mostly a campaign to remember as they won 29 times, amassed 94 points and finished their league campaign with an impressive goal difference of +45, helped massively by having a #9 with 23 goals.
At the moment, though, that looks a long way off of where they are now. Rafa Benitez’s side are currently low on confidence, funds and belief and if things don’t change soon they could find themselves back in the Championship, so the argument is whether or not that would be the worst thing in the world. The aim would obviously be to avoid relegation, but considering the thrill the fans got from winning the Championship, another drop may not be the worst thing in the world.
You can read the Magpies’ verdict on the Championship here:
Agree in some ways. Our last season in the championship was fun for the most part. I’d rather be in the PL though as a team fighting for Europe. But just existing as we do now with no ambition but to stay up to make the owner money is no fun.

100 percent agree. The championship was exciting, winning games & signing player’s and twitter was happy place .

I loved it, it was my first season where I could properly follow the team (just turned 17 and could go to matches myself) and some of the games we won made me fall in love with NUFC again
This and the championship is the most competitive league in the world

Agreed. After we first got relegated I said the championship was an exciting league to watch and it was nice to be the big fish so to speak.
Not sure I would be willing to sacrifice Prem status for it

Couldn't agree more. However, playing in the Championsip and being at the very top there wouldn't be possible or sustainable. If we missed out of promotion it would have been a disaster and not near as much fun as it was…

The Magpies loved their season in the Championship, and whilst they don’t want to go back, it could be for the best in the long run.
