This summer has been a depressing one for Newcastle fans, however, they could be set to sign this Yoshinori Muto from Mainz to make things seem a bit sweeter. According to German outlet, Bild, the Japanese World Cup star could join the club if the Magpies are able to fend off interest from West Ham.
With Newcastle failing to strike a deal for a striker so far this summer, the club are now targeting Japan international Yoshinori Muto. Newcastle will need to fend off from West Ham in the Japan international who impressed last season with Mainz. [Bild] #NUFC

In 66 Bundesliga appearances, Muto has bagged 20 goals and provided a further ten assist for teammates, meaning he contributes a goal almost every other game. That sort of record would give the Magpies some serious relief as their goalscoring problems roll on. Last season the club only managed to score 38 goals across the whole season despite the fact they finished 10th. If Rafa Benitez can improve his goalscoring rate then there’s every chance they can push higher.
At the moment, The Geordies employ Dwight Gayle, Aleksandar Mitrovic and Joselu as their three strikers. Mitrovic is set to be sold though, with Fulham looking like swooping for the Serbian for around £20 million, leaving the Magpies with just two strikers who can’t hit a barn door between them. Joselu and Gayle scored a combined 10 goals last season and the fans would be delighted if they could get a striker in who’s capable of reaching double figures on their own.

honestly id take this fella over some of the other options. maybe bring him and rondon in would besound business. but to be fair as things stand were signing no one else!

Whilst Muto is certainly a more left-field option, the fans aren’t against signing the Japanese man.
