Without the goals of Dwight Gayle, Newcastle United would not have achieved promotion to the Premier League in the 2016/17 season. Gayle is one of those who seems to suffer from 'Cameron Jerome syndrome' in that he's too good for the Championship and not good enough for the Premier League and the fans are ready to let him go, as The Chronicle report West Brom are interested.

In the Championship, Newcastle's number nine bagged himself a tidy return of 23 goals in 32 games, a record for any striker to be proud of. However, when you step up to the premier league things get a whole lot harder and that showed in Gayle's goal tally as he only managed to find the net six times last season in his 35 games. Understandably there are plenty of Championship clubs after the 27-year-old, including West Brom.

If The Magpies were to use Gayle as a bargaining piece with West Brom it could help them land one of their own transfer targets in Salomon Rondon. The move would make sense as Rondon is being looked at as a serious potential target by Rafa Benitez, who's need for a striker is far from a secret. The club looks to be selling Aleksandar Mitrovic this summer and if the club doesn't bring in a striker they could be left in real trouble come the end of this season.

Whilst the fans appreciate what Gayle did for them in the Championship, they know that they won't be going very far with him up front in the Premier League.
