Newcastle fans have been given the rare opportunity to have a weekend off of football seeing as their side hasn’t been in competitive action this weekend. However, on Saturday the Magpies faced CSKA Moscow in a friendly fixture whilst on their training camp in Spain, the game finished 1-1 and the fans loved celebrating Salomon Rondon’s opener.

For the Geordies, featuring in a game against CSKA Moscow had shades of a European game about it. The Russian side are regulars in the Champions League and often qualify for the competition through winning the Russian Premier League, the domestic league in Russia that the Moscow side currently sit 3rd in. It was a good test for Rafa Benitez’s side and a nice reminder that they can compete at the top level.
The next step for the Geordies will be to get back into Premier League action and start to shine again, secure their top-flight for status and then get into a position over the next few seasons where they can start planning for more games against European regulars like CSKA and the like. However, for now, the mid-season friendly was just a nice taste of what could be and the Magpies will be pleased to see their side looking sharp ahead of their return to action next weekend.

Like how Rafa has got them playing and bedding in new players whilst other teams are resting. Newcastle will stay up, no doubt.

The Magpies loved seeing their side in action against the Russian outfit and will hope to see them playing against similar sides in Europe soon enough.
