Newcastle United fans will once again spend the summer holding their breath as they wait to see if they can hang on to manager Rafa Benitez for another campaign.
The Magpies will be hoping to keep hold of the Spaniard and continue the success he is bringing to the club under circumstances off the field which are not doing him any favours whatsoever.
However, with Benitez set to discuss his future this week, thoughts within the club must surely be turning to strengthening the ranks, while Benitez will also be wanting to ensure the club keep hold of some of the top stars already at St James’ Park.
One of those players is young midfielder Sean Longstaff, who has been linked with a move to Manchester United this weekend as they seek to complete their own squad overhaul.
And while the move to Old Trafford might be tempting for Longstaff, we here in the Tavern feel Newcaslte simply have to do all they can to keep hold of the youngster.
While Longstaff saw his season cut short through injury in the final weeks of the campaign, there was little doubting what he brought to the scene in terms of his combative qualities in the middle of the park, while he also showed enough on the ball to suggest he will be a top Premier League player for years to come.
Longstaff epitomises everything that Newcastle fans love about the club and their homegrown players, and for the club to sell their prized asset already would be a bitter blow to everyone involved in the north east.
The youngster would indeed be a success at Man United if he made the move, but sometimes you have to concentrate on building your own club, and Longstaff and Newcastle can go on to have a superb future themselves if they are kept together.
