Newcastle land French defender

Newcastle United fans in the Football Transfer Tavern have raised their pints in approval with the news from Mail Online that the club have agreed a £5.5 million deal to bring Lille full back Mathieu Debuchy to St. James’ Park.

The Tyneside club were very close to signing the 27-year-old during the summer but Lille rejected a deadline day £5m bid despite the defender’s desire to leave the French side with Inter Milan also interested.

The French international, who can also play in midfield, has spent his entire career at Lille and is highly rated after some impressive performances for Les Blues during Euro 2012.

Debuchy will link up with former team mate and close friend Yohan Cabaye who was also part of Lille’s double winning squad of 2011, in the next few days as he flies into England to tie up the deal to bring him to the Premier League.

The full back appears to be a straight replacement for out of contract Danny Simpson as Alan Pardew brings an end to the long running transfer saga as he looks to prevent his side leaking goals as they have done in recent weeks.

Pardew will be hoping that Debuchy will be the first of several arrivals in the January transfer window with Newcastle struggling for form after last season’s achievements.
