Newcastle United supporters have been particularly downbeat in the Transfer Tavern in recent times after seeing their side’s miserable run of form continue with a 1-0 defeat to Everton at St James’ Park on Wednesday night.
Rafa Benitez’s men made a fine start to life back in the Premier League by winning four of their opening nine matches, but they have since seriously struggled and now find themselves hovering above the relegation zone. And they were unable to stop the rot on Wednesday night either as a Wayne Rooney strike midway through the first half was enough to secure a 1-0 win for Sam Allardyce’s Toffees in the North East, a result which kept them in the top half of the Premier League table.
Subsequently, there have been many deflated Magpies fans in the Tavern in recent times, although their mood may be improved if recent odds from Ladbrokes are anything to go by, which outline that Benitez’s side are the 6/4 favourites to land Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw in January.
The 22-year-old has struggled for regular first team football at Old Trafford since Jose Mourinho was appointed as manager back in 2016, albeit injuries have played a part in his difficulties.
And with just four senior appearances for the Red Devils so far this term, speculation about his future has been building ahead of the January transfer window, with Newcastle one side reportedly interested a move for the England international.
And recent odds from Ladbrokes have added further fuel to the fire as the Magpies are the 6/4 favourites to sign Shaw in January, ahead of a possible reunion with Mauricio Pochettino at Tottenham (3/1), and a move to their North London rivals Arsenal (9/2).
However, only time will tell whether the bookies have got this one right.
Landlord’s verdict: Luke Shaw’s Manchester United career has been blighted by injuries, while his seemingly strained relationship with manager Jose Mourinho hasn’t helped his chances of regular first team football at Old Trafford.
The 22-year-old has managed just four senior appearances this season, yet with a World Cup to come in the summer and the left-back very much in with a chance of making Gareth Southgate’s England squad, he knows that more football is needed for him to make the plane to Russia.
And Newcastle United are one side reportedly interested in the defender, and that interest appears to have been backed up by the bookies as Ladbrokes have the Magpies down as 6/4 favourites to sign Shaw in January, ahead of North London duo Tottenham and Arsenal.
Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez has found things tough in the North East in recent times, yet landing the 22-year-old in January could certainly help with their fight against relegation.
