Newcastle United supporters have been pretty downbeat in the Transfer Tavern in recent days after seeing their side lose for the eighth time in their last nine Premier League games after going down 1-0 to Arsenal on Saturday.
Rafa Benitez’s men made a solid start to life back in the top-flight by winning four of their opening nine matches, but things have since taken a turn for the worse with just one point accumulated from a possible 27. And they were unable to stop the rot on Saturday as well as an excellent Mesut Ozil strike midway through the first half was enough to secure Arsene Wenger’s side a 1-0 success at the Emirates Stadium, thus inflicting an 11th loss of the campaign on the Magpies as well as instigating their fall into the Premier League’s bottom three.
Subsequently, there have been many disappointed Newcastle fans in the Tavern in the last few days, although their mood could well be improved by a recent report from Ladbrokes, which outlines that they are the favourites to land Leicester City’s Islam Slimani in the January transfer window.
The 29-year-old made the move to the King Power Stadium back in 2016 yet has struggled to nail down a regular starting berth in the Midlands, earning 41 appearances in all for the Foxes, in which time he has bagged 12 goals.
But with no Premier League starts for the club since their 2-1 defeat to champions Chelsea back in September, it looks like his time at Leicester is heading to a close, and a recent report from Ladbrokes has Newcastle the 6/4 favourites to sign the Algeria international in January, ahead of West Brom at 7/2.
And with the Mapgies desperately short in the attacking department, it could turn out to be a potentially crucial January deal in their quest to avoid relegation come the end of the season.
Landlord’s verdict: Islam Slimani became the most expensive player in Leicester City’s history back in 2016 when he moved to the King Power Stadium for £28 million, but it’s fair to say that things haven’t worked out for the striker in the East Midlands.
The 29-year-old has started just once in the Premier League this term and not at all since the arrival of new boss Claude Puel, which has subsequently raised doubts about his long-term future with the Foxes.
And Newcastle United are one side who have been linked with the Algeria international in recent times, and reports suggest that they are the favourites to sign Slimani in January (6/4) ahead of the likes of West Brom (7/2) and Stoke City (4/1).
And with Rafa Benitez’s men stuck in a rut and in dire need of reinforcements in the New Year, it’s a deal which could be struck when the window reopens.
