Time's ticking down for Newcastle to sign any more layers to add to the squad.

Although the club have recently added Fabian Schar and look close to signing Yoshinori Muto, Mike Ashley still needs to bring in some players to help Rafa Benitez this upcoming season.

The Spaniard has been working under a very tight budget and within the proviso that the club must sell before they buy.

In recent weeks Newcastle have been linked with Bristol City defender, Joe Bryan, and according to HITC, Derby County have had a £3 million bid rejected by Bristol City. With that in mind, Newcastle must come in and bid for the defender who is arguably one of the best in the Championship.

The Breakdown

While much attention has been paid to Newcastle's frontline, which although is in dire need of a striker - especially after Aleksandar Mitrovic's departure - it's at full-back where Newcastle are very weak.

As it stands, Benitez has Paul Dummett and Achraf Lazaar as his two fullbacks. With the importance placed on fullbacks in the modern era, Newcastle need a player who is great going forward, and Bryan is one of those.

The 24-year-old played 43 games last year in the Championship, scoring five goals and three assists. With only a year left on his deal, Newcastle may be able to buy the fullback on the cheap which would appeal to Mike Ashley.

Moreover, Bristol may be more keen to Bryan to Newcastle rather than Derby, their Championship rival.
