Newcastle need to bring former fan favourite Georginio Wijnaldum back to St. James Park

Newcastle fans are hoping to see some marquee signings arrive at St. James Park before the transfer window slams shut.

The Magpies have made three permanent signings so far this summer as Rafael Benitez looks to bolster his squad. Mikel Merino and Martin Dubravka completed permanent moves after impressing on loan last season and Benitez landed Swansea midfielder, Ki Seung-Yung on a free transfer. While their signings thus far have been smart, Newcastle lack a real big name to get the fans off their seat.

Signing a playmaker to link up with Jonjo Shelvey in the midfield would delight the Newcastle faithful. The Magpies need someone who can unlock a defence and bring the best out of Ayoze Perez in the attack. The perfect move could be to resign Liverpool midfielder – Georginio Wijnaldum.

Valued at £27m by Transfermarkt, the Dutchman left the club in 2016 following their relegation to the Championship. He has made 92 appearances for the Reds since departing Tyneside but could find playing time limited next season following the arrivals of Naby Keita and Fabinho. He has been linked with a switch to Fenerbache to link up with former manager Phillip Cocu.

The Magpies should offer the 27-year-old the chance to stay in the Premier League if he decides to leave Merseyside. Wijnaldum was a fan favourite during his time at Newcastle and would be welcomed back with open arms. Alongside Shelvey in the engine room, Benitez has a midfield capable of qualifying for Europe.
