Newcastle reportedly ‘hopeful’ of agreement as some good news finally emerges

Newcastle United supporters have been pretty despondent in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their side go down 3-0 away at Premier League champions Chelsea in the FA Cup on Sunday, thus bowing out at the fourth round stage for the second successive season.

Rafa Benitez’s men went into their clash with the Blues having beaten League Two leaders Luton Town in the previous round, yet their inability to get to round five (they haven’t done so since 2006) was again on show after a disappointing display in West London. A brace from Michy Batshuayi as well as a Marcos Alonso free-kick was enough to secure a comprehensive victory for Antonio Conte’s side, thus leaving the Magpies purely focusing on preserving their Premier League status in the second half of the season.

Subsequently, there have been many deflated Newcastle fans in the Tavern in recent times, yet their mood may well be improved by a recent report from The Daily Mail, which suggests that the club are ‘hopeful’ of agreeing a deal to bring goalkeeper Martin Dubravka to St James’ Park.

The 29-year-old currently plays his trade with Sparta Prague in the Czech First League and has done so since the summer, in which time he has gone on to make 15 appearances for the club in all competitions, keeping seven clean sheets and conceding just 12 goals.

And it appears that his fine form has attracted the interest of Benitez’s Newcastle, who are reportedly ‘hopeful’ of securing an agreement with the 29-year-old to bring him to the North East, as the Magpies seek to bolster their goalkeeping ranks ahead of the second half of the season.

And given this afternoon’s disappointment surrounding their failed attempt to land Daniel Sturridge, this seemingly likely deal at least provides our resident Magpies fans with some cheer in the last knockings of the window.

Landlord’s verdict: Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez has been chopping and changing between Karl Darlow and Rob Elliot throughout the current campaign, a clear indication that he isn’t quite convinced by either of them.

So reports that the Spaniard is interested in a goalkeeper aren’t overly surprising, with the Magpies reportedly keen on Sparta Prague shot-stopper Martin Dubravka, a 29-year-old who has represented Slovakia on nine occasions.

And recent reports suggest that the Magpies are ‘hopeful’ of an agreement with the goalkeeper and his club over a deal this month, as finally some good news emerges for Benitez in what has so far been a hugely frustrating transfer window.

A deal is not done yet though, and with just 48 hours of the window remaining, it still remains to be seen whether they can indeed get a deal done for the international shot-stopper.
