Newcastle United supporters have been pretty downbeat in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side meekly lose 1-0 to Burnley on Monday night, thus suffering a fourth Premier League defeat of the campaign.
Rafa Benitez’s men went into their meeting with the Clarets unbeaten in their previous three league matches, with draws against Liverpool and Southampton succeeded by a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace at St James’ Park. However, they were unable to keep their momentum going as a Jeff Hendrick strike 16 minutes from time was enough to seal a 1-0 victory for Sean Dyche’s side, a result which saw them move above the Magpies into seventh place in the Premier League table.
Thus, there has been a flat atmosphere among our resident Newcastle fans in the Tavern this week, although they may well be encouraged by a recent report from CalcioMercato (via The Daily Mirror), which suggests that the North East giants are in the race for Atlanta United star Miguel Almiron.
The 23-year-old only moved to the Major League Soccer outfit back in December of last year but has certainly proved his worth with nine goals in 30 league games for the club, thus helping them to a fourth place finish in the Eastern Conference, and to fourth place in the overall standings.
And with ten caps for Paraguay as well, the attacker is clearly making headway in the United States, and has reportedly attracted much attention from the Premier League as Benitez’s Newcastle are thought to be interested in the 23-year-old’s services.
However, they look set to face a battle from top-flight giants Arsenal and Serie A heavyweights Inter Milan, so it very much remains to be seen what the future holds for the attacking sensation.
Landlord’s verdict: This time last year, Miguel Almiron was playing his trade in Argentina with Lanus, but fast forward 12 months and he is being linked with a move to the Premier League.
And that’s because the 23-year-old has seriously impressed at Atlanta United in the MLS, having bagged nine goals in 30 league games for the club to help them to the Eastern Conference knockout round, although they subsequently lost to Columbus Crew.
Nonetheless, the attacker has clearly done something right as Newcastle United and Arsenal are reportedly interested in his services, and with the Magpies evidently struggling in the final third of the pitch, it’s a deal they could well look to get done in January.
